Harnessing the Stormwater

A major problem the Group came up against were the stormwater drains that exited on our revegetation site.  The frequency and volume of water meant mulch and plants were washed out with any small downpour. To deal with the first drain was quite frustrating until a member came up with a solution to the problem.  This involved breaking the force of the water exiting the drain with a wall of soil and rocks and a thick planting of Lomandra on top, then rock-lined drains to carry the water across the site.

This not only overcame the erosion problem but also watered the site and provided irrigation across the planted areas. The two photographs (above right and below left) show the drain outlets and drains zig zagging across the site when this area was prepared in 1999. The third image (below right) shows the same area three years later.
