About our project

Caper white

Long term aim of the project is to restore natural riparian vegetation with a focus on establishing a permanent population of the Richmond birdwing butterfly, Ornithoptera richmondia and other butterfly species by provision of natural food plants.

Clearing and planting commenced unofficially about 10 years ago in an attempt to deter the public from using the site as a dump and countless loads of bottles, carpets, TV sets, garbags full of stolen clothing, doctor’s bags and handbags have been collected and disposed of, or returned to owners.

After clearing a jungle of balloon vine, Chinese elm, lantana and sunflower along the banks of Witton Creek, native trees and Aristolochia vines were established, but the relentless pressure from Glycine, Madeira vine and lack of water has made progress slow. Despite (and because of) the weeds, the creek bank is a haven for wildlife. Rails, spoonbills, herons, pied shags, grey duck, white tailed water rats, freshwater tortoises carpet pythons, green tree snakes and water dragons either breed or are regularly observed foraging on the banks or in the water.
