About us

Dianella caerulea

The Merri Merri Park Bushland Care Group has been active since 1993, in the beginning operating under the Greening Australia volunteer program. We are mainly local residents, and our group is now  a registered Habitat Brisbane group, guided and supported by the Brisbane City Council’s Program.

In the early years our work concentrated on the park area where we removed invasive weeds and replaced them with plant species native to the area. They are now well established to both sides of the dry Cubberla Creek bed and of much benefit to the park. This area is still being maintained by our group.

Our activities have expanded to various sites along Greenford Street downstream from Merri Merri Park. The areas on both sides of Cubberla Creek contain many different exotic and extremely invasive weeds, but are visually dominated by enormous thickets of Lantana (Lantana camara). Nevertheless, species of dry rainforests plants, not common locally,  and other native flora exist here. As the thickets provide shelter for a range of animals, the clearing of Lantana and the revegetation with native species is being done gradually and with a lot of care. We are proud, that some small parts along Cubberla Creek have already been restored to almost self-sufficient bushland

We hope to further widen the community involvement in our bushland regeneration work and to raise awareness for environmental issues among the residents of the area. By location, Merri Merri Park and the Greenford Street Reserve are extensions to Mt Coot-tha Forest Park. We aim to realise their potential as important habitat for native fauna and flora.
