Group Background

Working Bee October 1995

The group is restoring a rainforest gully in the Foothills of Mt. Coot-tha Forest Park using natural bush regeneration methods wherever possible with some plantings when necessary using fire-retardant species as the creek corridor backs on to residential properties.

We held our first working bee on 1 April 1995 on the western bank of the unnamed creek near where it flows under Fleming Road. The creek was not visible at that time as it was hidden by dense lantana.

Hidden in the lantana was a tall tree fern struggling to survive. When that beautiful tree fern fully recovered and was left standing on the creek bank freed from lantana it proved too tempting to someone! Yes, it was stolen an Anzac Day weekend in 1996. Fortunately, an offspring of the original has taken its place and is now just as tall and beautiful and hidden by even taller native vegetation.

The Hut Bushland Care Group is made up of a small number of committed/enthusiastic members of the local community, keen to make a difference and help improve their local environment. Some start off as inexperienced beginners, but soon learn to recognise the different plant species and the methods used to return the bushland to a self maintenance status.
