Weeds

Madeira Vine

Purple succulent

Madeira vine (left at Kimba St Reserve) and Purple succulent (right at Moore Park) smothering native vegetation

Our natural bushland contains many plants not native to the region they are found in. Most weeds especially in  suburban areas have started as ornamental garden plants. Dumping of garden waste and seed dispersal by wind and birds have created a major problem for our  local environment. Rampant weeds smother native vegetation, choke the creeks in our catchments and harm wildlife by destroying  habitat and food sources.

The information offered here reflects the problems in the bushland or park of your neighbourhood and along our waterways. It is meant to help bush carers in the Cubberla-Witton Catchments as well as local residents with identifying and tackling unwanted weeds.

The Flora section of this website provides information on  local native plants. We also recommend the Brisbane City Council’s Green Garden Guide which contains information  on common weeds and on native plants for your garden. It is available at all BCC Business Centres.

The Weed information listed below is currently being developed. If some information is not yet available, visit this site again.
